Sustainable Energy Resources and Their Applications
· BSAEA Editorial Team

A short tour of hydropower, biomass, geothermal and other sources, and where each tends to be used.
Each renewable resource has characteristic strengths. Understanding them helps explain why energy systems usually combine several sources.
Hydropower
Flowing water can provide controllable electricity generation. Large plants and small run-of-river installations raise different environmental questions, particularly regarding fish migration and river ecosystems.
Biomass
Wood, agricultural residues and biogas can supply heat and electricity. Sustainability depends on sourcing, forest management and efficient conversion.
Geothermal and ambient heat
Deep geothermal resources are limited in the Baltics, but shallow ground and ambient air are widely used through heat pumps for heating buildings.
